Latin-American Photography Winners

«Fervor e Paixäo» by Marcelo Buainain

The winners of the first photo competition by Centro Latinoamericano de Fotografía – the Latin-American Center of Photography – were announced last week. In the jury, which was chaired by René Burri from Magnum Photos (and president of Centro Latinoamericano de Fotografía), participated Sven Creutzmann from Blue Hour Photo Workshops. In addition the members of the jury were Dado Galdieri (ex AP), Carlos Cazalis, Roberto Candia (also ex AP) and Rodrigo Benavides, photographer and director of the Nacional Museum of Photography of Venezuela (Museo Nacional de Fotografía de Venezuela).

According to Sven Creutzmann a pre-jury edited all roughly 2.000 entries down to 278 images, which they passed to the final jury. «We then spent hours evaluating the photos, also always bearing in mind the importance of Latin-America elements in the photos. At the end we narrowed it down to 8 contenders for the first three prices. From there the decision was not that difficult, and with René Burri having the final word».

The final result is:
1st price
Marcelo Buainain, Brazil, for his his b+w photo of kids playing, “Fervor e Paixäo”

2nd price
Alejandro Olivares, Chile, for his color photo “La Eterna Violencia”

3rd price
Cristobal Herrera,Cuba/USA, for the his b+w photo (again, of kids playing), “Ciénaga”

«Awarding these prizes always is a nice thing to do, but at the same time leaves kind of a sad feeling too, since by nature not all excellent photos can receive an award», says Sven Creutzmann.
